Chapter 3.5 -Drew
God, itâs hot as balls out already at 7:30 in the morning. What was I thinking, signing up for this race? I put my ear buds in and pull up the Foo Fighters. I always listen to them when I begin and finish every race. I still miss him every day. I wonder if heâs still dating that guy that I saw him with at that café. It was just a couple of months ago, but heâs a commitment kind of guy. He was never into one-night stands like I was. Not that Iâve been doing any of that lately. Iâve been celibate since I left his place in March. Hard to believe that weâve been apart this long. God, I still miss him every day.
I pull up my leg behind me to stretch and then pull my arms behind my head. I look around and notice other people doing the same thing. This race starts in front of the gas building and ends on High Street, two blocks away. It goes along the water front and then under the bridge before heading back up on the road and over another bridge. Itâs a pretty easy race, Iâve done it before. The race begins and I start humming along to âLearning to Flyâ.
As I go under the over pass, making the last mile, I pass by a blond haired kid that looks vaguely familiar. I keep stealing glances at him. I know that Iâve seen him before, but I canât remember where Iâve seen him. He must feel me looking at him because he turns his head and looks at me. I see his eyes go wide and he starts looking around, slowing down.
Whatever. I shake it off and continue running. But thereâs something about that wide-eyed stare that wonât leave me alone. I cue up âEverlongâ and race towards the finish line. My final time is 24:16. Not bad. I go through the corral and stop at the water station. I lean against a tree and drink some water, while stretching my legs and watching the other runners come through. After another two minutes, I see the blond kid run through. He spots me, eyes go wide again. I narrow my eyes and try to place him.
I stalk up to him. I gotta find out who he is. He walks over to the water bottle table and does a quick check over his shoulder. His eyes widen again as he sees that Iâm right behind him. He picks up the pace and grabs a bottle and starts to walk away.
âHey.â I say a little more forcefully than I intend to. âDo I know you?â I ask a little softer and touch his shoulder.
He doesnât say anything as he turns around to face me.
âIâm not trying to pick you up. You just seem very familiar to me.â
He shakes his head no. âI gotta go meet my friend.â He gives me a hesitant wave and takes off. When heâs a little bit away, he looks over his shoulder to see where I am.
